RECAP: Opening practice for the PIRTEK Perth SuperNight was held under lights in cool but clear conditions. First runs of the session saw Coulthard slot into third and McLaughlin sixth.
With the track having been resurfaced, the top 20 were soon under McLaughlin’s 2017 lap record time. McLaughlin returned to the garage for a couple of adjustments and some tyres after 10 minutes, and then immediately jumped to the top of the timesheets with the first ever 53s Supercars lap at this circuit, a 53.8217s.
Coulthard continued doing race runs in the low 54s bracket, before also returning to the garage for changes. Both drivers returned to circuit with seven minutes to go to check the changes. All 25 cars were under the old lap record at this point.
Coulthard took a third set of used tyres late in the session, while McLaughlin received a mechanical black flag to check Car No. 17’s headlamps. He quickly returned to circuit for one final flyer
Coulthard continued, setting a 53.5565s time for fourth. McLaughlin ended the session eighth on a 53.7432.
COULTHARD QUOTE: “Pretty solid opening practice for us. Cool to drive this track with the new surface, and under lights too. It’s going to be real quick. Everyone was under the lap record, so were going to see some quick times this weekend.”
MCLAUGHLIN QUOTE: “I’m happy with that session. We focused on race runs mostly, and the car feels pretty good. The track is awesome, it’s going to rubber up and get faster so I think it’s going to be a cool weekend. Running under lights is great, I’m looking forward to it.
