RECAP: The final practice session of the weekend started with racing simulations, with a view to ensuring strong pace in tomorrow’s 1000km epic. McLaughlin took over Car No. 17 from Premat halfway through the session, and their focus switched to qualifying pace to prepare for this afternoon’s Top 10 Shootout. McLaughlin was on a flying lap when a moment at The Cutting saw him very nearly hit the wall, forcing him to abort the lap. Fabian Coulthard and Tony D’Alberto spent the entire session working on race pace in Car No.12, as they would not run in the shootout that afternoon.
Scott McLaughlin rolled out as the eighth car for the Top 10 Shootout late this afternoon, after provisionally qualifying third yesterday. The team made changes to the car overnight, and whilst McLaughlin is happy with the result, he couldn’t quite extract the maximum from the car over the single lap. He and Alex Premat will start tomorrow’s 1000km race from fifth on the grid. Fabian Coulthard and Tony D’Alberto will start 15th. The next on-track session is the warm-up tomorrow morning at 8:05am local time. Race start is at 11:10am local time.
COULTHARD QUOTE: “I’m excited. We’re not starting from the greatest position, but people have won the race from further back than that. We just have to stay safe, keep out of trouble, run a good strategy and just get to the last hour, where the race really begins. I’m excited, I’m confident in our race car and hopefully we can pick them off one by one.”
MCLAUGHLIN QUOTE: “At the end of the day, we can give ourselves a pass mark. I think by the time I figured out the car was better than this morning, it was too late. The last sector we probably weren’t amazing, but I’m confident in the changes we’ve made, and are going in the right direction with the car for the race.”
D’ALBERTO QUOTE: “This morning’s practice session was the only chance for me on track in the supercar today, and the car feel nice. I think we have a good race car for the big one tomorrow, and while we start a little way back we know that plenty of others have won it from further back. We’ll give it our best shot, that’s for sure.”
PREMAT QUOTE: I think we’re looking pretty strong heading into the race tomorrow. We’ve been sticking to our process all the way through the weekend, tomorrow is the last warm-up in the morning and we have a strong car. We’ll tune it a bit to make it a little bit better, but I think we have a car that can win the race and we will be trying to do that tomorrow.”
